It was approaching nine a.m. when Agatha stretched her arms and looked up at the antique cuckoo clock perched on the stone mantel above the fireplace. “Oh my!” she squeaked. “Have I slept so late? And in the living room! What will the neighbours think?” It was then that she noticed the empty coffee table, and remembered.

Agatha shrugged to her feet and peered about the room for the missing silver can. She even hunched down on her knees and searched beneath the table. Nothing. Gazing out the living room window, she saw that the yard was empty, the flower garden undisturbed. She tapped her fingers against the glass and heard a familiar click. The window was as solid as ever.

A dream, then? Agatha asked herself. She searched her pockets, but found no business cards. No fiver either. Now, what had that nice woman’s card said? Humanity Protection Agency? Agatha’s lips curled into a grin. It’s about time someone began protecting people. And from more than just nuisance ghosts and infernal salesmen, too.

Agatha hoped to meet this Gabrielle person again. And no longer would she think the worst of a woman just because she was smartly dressed.

That night, Agatha waited up past ten o’clock for ghostly stirrings. When none came, she went to her bedroom and enjoyed her first good night’s sleep in months.
